In plain words

My heart longs to be close to the One I love.

The perfect Guru leads me to my Beloved. Again and again, I give my whole heart in thanks to my Guru.

When your heart longs for something good, wisdom is what leads you toward it.
The deeper layer

When the heart longs for the good, a wise guide shows the way.

This is the rahao line, the "pause," the center of the shabad (a hymn). Mai prabh milan paraym man aasaa: my mind longs, with love, to meet the One. This longing runs all through Raag Wadahans.

Gur pooraa maylaavai mayraa preetam: the perfect Guru, the wise teacher, brings me to my Beloved. Think of being lost in a big city and finding someone who knows the way and walks you home.

Ha-o vaar vaar aapnay guroo ka-o jaasaa: again and again, I give myself to my Guru. That is how full the thank-you is for the one who guides.

A Question to Sit With

What do you long for most — and who helps point you toward it?
