So I go to someone who has found that closeness and ask, 'How did you do it?'
She says: 'Kindness reached me — and I let go of the whole 'mine-versus-yours' way of seeing.'
'Give your whole heart, your whole self — that's the path,' she says.
'And when kindness meets you, your little light simply merges into the great Light.'
This is the shabad's centerpiece and one of Gurbani's loveliest teaching-moments: the seeker asks the happy soul-bride her secret. Her answer is precise and profound: "I abandoned the distinction between mine and yours" (mera-tera) — she dropped the ego's me-vs-them split — and "dedicated everything, mind, body and soul." The path to closeness is the melting of separateness. And the reward: "her light merges into the Light" (jot samaanee) — the little flame returning to the great fire. For a child: the secret of feeling truly close is letting go of the 'mine, not yours' wall and giving your whole heart.
How does letting go of 'that's mine, not yours' help you feel closer to people?
