Verse 6 of 6

At Its Deepest, the Loving Heart and the One Become One

har vaykhan ka-o sabh ko-ee lochai so vaykhai jis aap vikhaalay.
Everyone longs to see the Lord, but he alone sees Him, whom the Lord causes to see Him.
jis no nadar karay mayraa pi-aaraa so har har sadaa samaalay.
One upon whom my Beloved bestows His Glance of Grace, cherishes the Lord, Har, Har forever.
so har har naam sadaa sadaa samaalay jis satgur pooraa mayraa mili-aa.
He alone cherishes the Lord, Har, Har, forever and ever, who meets my Perfect True Guru.
naanak har jan har ikay ho-ay har jap har saytee rali-aa. ||6||1||3||
O Nanak, the Lord's humble servant and the Lord become One; meditating on the Lord, he blends with the Lord. ||6||1||3||

In plain words

Everyone wishes to see the One — and that seeing comes as a gift of grace.

A heart touched by that kindness holds the One close forever.

It happens when you meet true wisdom that opens your eyes.

And then something wonderful: the loving heart and the One become simply one.

At its very deepest, a loving heart and the One it loves become simply one.
The deeper layer

The shabad closes on union: "everyone longs to see the Lord, but he alone sees Him whom the Lord causes to see." The sight is grace-given. And the destination is the raag's deepest note: "the Lord's servant and the Lord become One... he blends with the Lord" — jot samaanee again, the light merging into Light. The colophon (||6||1||3||) closes this Second-House shabad. For a child: everyone wishes to be close to the good, that closeness is a gift, and at its deepest, the loving heart and the One become one.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to be so close to someone or something that you feel like one?
