The Long Wandering Was Leading to Good Company

firat firat santan peh aa-i-aa.
After wandering around for so long, I have finally come to the Saints;
dookh bharam hamaaraa sagal mitaa-i-aa.
all of my pains and doubts have been eradicated.
mahal bulaa-i-aa parabh amrit bhoonchaa.
God summoned me to the Mansion of His Presence, and blessed me with the Ambrosial Nectar of His Name.

Says Nanak, my God is lofty and exalted. ||4||1||

In plain words

After a long, long time of wandering, I finally found my way to loving company —

and all my aches and doubts melted away.

I felt welcomed home and given the sweetest gift.

My One is lofty and wonderful beyond words.

The longed-for moment comes when you find your way to good company — and the long wandering was leading there.
The deeper layer

The shabad answers its own question (from the rahao): the meeting comes "after wandering around for so long," when "I have finally come to the Saints" — the good company — where "all my pains and doubts are eradicated." The auspicious moment isn't a calendar date; it's the moment you find your way to what's good and true, often after long wandering. "God summoned me... and blessed me with the Ambrosial Nectar." For a child: the longed-for moment comes when you finally find your way to good company — and the long wandering was leading there all along.

A Question to Sit With

Has a long, hard search ever finally led you somewhere really good?
