What Holds You Up Is Itself a Given Kindness

ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਆਧਾਰੀ ॥
naam tayraa man tan aaDhaaree.
Your Name is the Support of our mind and body.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੩॥੮॥
naanak daas bakhsees tumaaree. ||3||8||
This is Your blessing to Nanak, Your slave. ||3||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Your Name is what holds up my heart and my whole self.

And that's Your kindness to me — a gift I didn't earn.

The very thing that holds you up is itself a kindness you were given.
The deeper layer

The shabad closes: "Your Name is the Support of my mind and body; this is Your blessing to Nanak, Your slave." Even the support we lean on is itself a gift given. The colophon (||3||8||) closes the shabad. For a child: the very thing that holds you up is a kindness you were given.

A Question to Sit With

What's something that holds you up and steadies you that you're thankful for?
