Even a Sinking Stone Can Be Lifted to Safety

ਹਮ ਨੀਚ ਸੇ ਊਤਮ ਭਏ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
ham neech say ootam bha-ay har kee sarnaa-ee.
I am lowly, but I have been exalted, entering the Sanctuary of the Lord.

He has lifted up the sinking stone; True is His glorious greatness. ||4||

In plain words

I felt small and low, and then found myself lifted up simply by coming for shelter.

A stone that was sinking got carried to safety — that's how great the kindness is.

No matter how low or stuck you feel — even like a sinking stone — you can be lifted up and carried to safety.
The deeper layer

A landmark verse, and one of Gurbani's most encouraging images: "I am lowly, but I have been exalted, entering the Sanctuary... He has lifted up the sinking stone." A stone thrown in water sinks — it's the last thing you'd expect to float. Yet grace "lifts the sinking stone." The most unlikely, the most given-up-on, is carried to safety. For a child: no matter how low or stuck you feel — even like a sinking stone — you can be lifted up and carried to safety.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt like a 'sinking stone,' and then someone or something lifted you up?
