Bitter Feelings Can Be Truly Turned Sweet

ਬਿਖੁ ਸੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਏ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
bikh say amrit bha-ay gurmat buDh paa-ee.
From poison, I have been transformed into Ambrosial Nectar; under Guru's Instruction, I have obtained wisdom.
ਅਕਹੁ ਪਰਮਲ ਭਏ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਵਸਾਈ ॥੫॥

From bitter herbs, I have been transformed into sandalwood; this fragrance permeates me deep within. ||5||

In plain words

What felt bitter and poisonous in me was slowly turned sweet, like nectar.

Like a plain bitter plant catching the scent of sandalwood, a lovely fragrance spread through me.

The bitter, prickly feelings inside you can slowly be turned sweet — you can truly be changed, not just hide them.
The deeper layer

The transformation deepens with two beautiful images: "from poison I have been transformed into Ambrosial Nectar... from bitter herbs into sandalwood, this fragrance permeates me." What was toxic and bitter inside — the anger, the scattered cravings of P0 — is transformed, not just suppressed. The bitter shrub standing near the sandalwood tree slowly takes on its fragrance (an image the Bhagats loved too). For a child: the bitter, prickly feelings inside you can slowly be turned sweet — you can be changed, not just told to hide them.

A Question to Sit With

What's a bitter or prickly feeling you have that you'd like to see slowly turn sweeter?
