Being Alive, as You Are, Is a Rare Gift

ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੁਲੰਭੁ ਹੈ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਖਟਿਆ ਆਇ ॥
maanas janam dulambh hai jag meh khati-aa aa-ay.
This human birth is so precious; one must earn the right to come into the world.

By perfect destiny, I met the True Guru, and I meditate on the Lord's Name. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This human life is precious — a rare and wonderful chance.

By good fortune I found real wisdom, and now I keep the good in mind.

Being alive and here, as you are, is a precious and wonderful chance — a rare gift.
The deeper layer

"This human birth is so precious; one must earn the right to come into the world." A recurring Gurbani teaching: to be alive, human, here is a rare and precious opportunity — not to be wasted. The qMonk voice keeps it as wonder and gratitude for the gift of a life. For a child: being alive and here is a precious, wonderful chance.

A Question to Sit With

What makes being alive feel like a precious gift to you?
