Wadahans, First Mehl:

Show mercy to me, that I may chant Your Name.

You Yourself created all, and You are pervading among all.

sarbay samaanaa aap toohai upaa-ay DhanDhai laa-ee-aa.
You Yourself are pervading among all, and You link them to their tasks.

Some, You have made kings, while others go about begging.

lobh moh tujh kee-aa meethaa ayt bharam bhulaanaa.
You have made greed and emotional attachment seem sweet; they are deluded by this delusion.

Be ever merciful to me; only then can I chant Your Name. ||1||

In plain words

Be kind to me, so I can keep Your beautiful Name in mind.

You made everyone and You live in everyone, quietly giving each of us our part to play.

Please keep being gentle with me — that's what lets me remember You.

Everyone has their own part to play — and a little kindness is what helps us remember what matters.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak opens with a prayer for grace: "show mercy to me, that I may chant Your Name." The One "created all and pervades among all," linking each to their tasks. The honest note — some are made "kings," others "beg," and greed and attachment can "seem sweet" and delude — is held within trust: even our remembering depends on the One's kindness. For a child: everyone has their own part to play, and a little kindness is what helps us remember what matters.

A Question to Sit With

What 'part' do you feel you get to play, and who helps you remember what matters?
