Deep within, the well of the heart is overflowing with the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar; the water-carrier draws and drinks in the water of the Shabad.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
jis nadar karay so-ee sach laagai rasnaa raam raveejai.
One who is blessed with the Lord's favor is attuned to the Truth; with his tongue, he chants the Lord's Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਰ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
naanak naam ratay say nirmal hor ha-umai mail bhareejai. ||2||
O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are immaculate. The others are full of the filth of egotism. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
The self-important, grabby feeling clouds the heart — but it can be washed clean.
Then the tongue tastes the sweetness of the good, and love drenches the heart.
Deep inside there's a well of sweet water; draw it up and drink.
There's a well of sweet water deep inside you — draw it up and drink, and your heart feels clean and glad.
The deeper layer
A lovely image: deep within "the well of the heart is overflowing with the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar; the water-carrier draws and drinks the water of the Shabad." There's a well inside you, full of sweet water — you just have to draw it up (through remembrance) and drink. The ego-"filth" that clouds it "is made pure" first. For a child: there's a well of sweet water deep inside you — draw it up and drink, and your heart feels clean and glad.
A Question to Sit With
What's a good, refreshing thing you can 'draw up' from inside yourself when you need it?
