ਹੰਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੰਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਖਰੀ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
haN-u gur bin haN-u gur bin kharee nimaanee raam.
Without the Guru, I am - without the Guru, I am totally dishonored.
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
jagjeevan jagjeevan daataa gur mayl samaanee raam.
The Life of the World, the Life of the World, the Great Giver has led me to meet and merge with the Guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
satgur mayl har naam samaanee jap har har naam Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Meeting with the True Guru, I have merged into the Naam, the Name of the Lord. I chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and meditate on it.
ਜਿਸੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਹੰਉ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਢੂਢੇਦੀ ਸੋ ਸਜਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
jis kaaran haN-u dhoondh dhoodhaydee so sajan har ghar paa-i-aa.
I was seeking and searching for Him, the Lord, my best friend, and I have found Him within the home of my own being.
ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਟਿ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੀ ॥
ayk darisat har ayko jaataa har aatam raam pachhaanee.
I see the One Lord, and I know the One Lord; I realize Him within my soul.
ਹੰਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੰਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਖਰੀ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
haN-u gur bin haN-u gur bin kharee nimaanee. ||1||

I was searching everywhere for my best friend —
and found the One right inside the home of my own heart.
Now I see the One, and know the One, right here within me.
The good you go searching for everywhere turns out to live right inside your own heart.
Guru Ram Das gives the raag's inward turn in his warm style: "I was seeking and searching for Him, my best friend, and I have found Him within the home of my own being." After looking everywhere, the One turns up inside. "I see the One, know the One, realize Him within my soul." For a child: your best friend, the good you're searching for, turns out to live right inside your own heart.
