Sikhism·Raag Wadahans·Shabad 4
Verse 3 of 5

The Heart's Deepest Growth Is a Partnership, Not a Solo Climb

ਨਦਰੀ ਮਰਿ ਕੈ ਜੀਵੀਐ ਨਦਰੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
nadree mar kai jeevee-ai nadree sabad vasai man aa-ay.
By His Grace, one dies while yet alive, and by His Grace, the Word of the Shabad is enshrined in the mind.
ਨਦਰੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
nadree hukam bujhee-ai hukmay rahai samaa-ay. ||2||
By His Grace, one understands the Hukam of the Lord's Command, and by His Command, one merges into the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

By that same kindness, the grabby self grows quiet and good words take root in you.

You start to understand the deep flow of things, and you feel at home in it.

Even the deepest growing-up of the heart is a partnership with a larger kindness, not a solo climb.
The deeper layer

The grace-refrain continues into the deepest matters: "by His Grace one dies while yet alive... understands the Hukam... merges into the Lord." Even jeevat marnaa (quieting the ego) and understanding Hukam (the flow of existence) are grace-given. The point stands: the whole journey home is a partnership, not a solo climb.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you couldn't have done all by yourself?
