A Loving Heart Merges Like a Drop Into the Sea

ਛੰਤੁ ॥

Chhant:
ਮਿਲਿ ਜਲੁ ਜਲਹਿ ਖਟਾਨਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
mil jal jaleh khataanaa raam.
As water mixes and blends with water,
ਸੰਗਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਨਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
sang jotee jot milaanaa raam.
so does one's light mix and blend with the Lord's Light.
ਸੰਮਾਇ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਰਤੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਹਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

Merging with the perfect, all-powerful Creator, one comes to know his own self.

Then, he enters the celestial state of absolute Samaadhi, and speaks of the One and Only Lord.
ਆਪਿ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੁ ਵਖਾਨਾ ॥

He Himself is unmanifest, and He Himself is liberated; He Himself speaks of Himself.

O Nanak, doubt, fear and the limitations of the three qualities are dispelled, as one merges into the Lord, like water blending with water. ||4||2||

In plain words

Like a drop of water blending back into water, a loving heart merges into the One.

Joined like that, you finally come to know your own true self.

The doubt and fear and pulling-apart all dissolve, and only the One remains.

A loving heart merges into the great goodness like a drop of water into the sea — safe, home, knowing itself.
The deeper layer

The composition closes with Gurbani's great union image: jio jal mahi jal aae khataanaa — "as water blends with water, so does one's light blend with the Lord's Light." The loving heart merges into the One like a drop returning to the sea — nothing lost, fully home — and "comes to know his own self." Doubt, fear, and the pulling-apart of the "three qualities" all dissolve. The colophon (||4||2||) closes. For a child: a loving heart merges into the great goodness like a drop of water into the sea — safe, home, and finally knowing itself.

A Question to Sit With

What do you imagine a water drop feels as it joins the whole ocean?
