Verse 8 of 8

It's Okay to Be Sad; Don't Stay Stuck There

ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਵੇਸੁ ਪਲਟਿਆ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਸਚੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੋ ॥
gur mili-ai vays palti-aa saa Dhan sach seegaaro.
Meeting with the Guru, the soul-bride's dress is transformed, and she is adorned with Truth.
ਆਵਹੁ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੋ ॥
aavhu milhu sahayleeho simrahu sirjanhaaro.
Come and meet with me, O brides of the Lord; let's meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord.
ਬਈਅਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੋੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੋ ॥
ba-ee-ar naam sohaaganee sach savaaranhaaro.
Through the Naam, the soul-bride becomes the Lord's favorite; she is adorned with Truth.
ਗਾਵਹੁ ਗੀਤੁ ਨ ਬਿਰਹੜਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥੮॥੩॥
gaavhu geet na birharhaa naanak barahm beechaaro. ||8||3||
Do not sing the songs of separation, O Nanak; reflect upon God. ||8||3||

In plain words

When we turn toward what's good, something in us is made new and lovely.

'Come, let's remember the good together,' the song says.

So don't stay stuck in the songs of separation — turn your heart, gently, toward what's good and lasting.

It's okay to be sad — and we're gently reminded not to stay stuck there, but to turn our hearts toward what's good.
The deeper layer

It is okay to be sad. Guru Nanak gently helps us not to stay stuck there.

This is the last verse of the mourning song. Gur mili-ai vays palti-aa: meeting the Guru, the soul-bride's clothes are changed. Saa dhan sach seegaaro: now she is dressed in Truth. Something in her is made new.

Aavhu milhu sahayleeho: come, friends, let us meet. Simrahu sirjanhaaro: let us remember the Creator together.

Then the healing instruction. Gaavhu geet na birharhaa: do not keep singing songs of separation. Naanak barahm beechaaro: says Nanak, think about the One instead.

This is not saying grief is wrong. The whole song has honored it. It is a loving hand that walks us through sadness toward healing. Think of a friend who sits with you while you cry, then says, "Come on, let's go for a walk." It is okay to be sad. We just do not have to stay stuck there. We can turn, together, toward what is good and lasting.

A Question to Sit With

After being sad for a while, what helps you gently turn back toward good and happy things?
