Alongside Your Worries Is a Real Light

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਾਏ ॥
aasaa mansaa ayhu sareer hai antar jot jagaa-ay.
Hope and desire abide in this body, but the Lord's Light shines within as well.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੰਧੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੪॥੩॥

O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs remain in bondage; the Gurmukhs are liberated. ||4||3||

In plain words

Hope and wanting live in us — and so does a real light, shining right alongside them.

When we forget the light we get stuck; when we turn toward it, we go free.

You have wants and worries — and right alongside them, a real light; turning toward it is what sets you free.
The deeper layer

The shabad's lovely close: "hope and desire abide in this body, but the Lord's Light shines within as well." Our restless wanting and a genuine inner light coexist — we are not just our cravings; there's a lamp in there too. The manmukh (forgetful) "remains in bondage," the gurmukh (turned toward the light) "is liberated." For a child: yes, you have wants and worries — and right alongside them is a real light; turning toward it is what sets you free.

A Question to Sit With

Can you feel both a 'wanting' part and a calmer, brighter part inside you? Which do you want to turn toward?
