Effort Spent to Puff Yourself Up Ends Empty

Acting in ego, they lose, and nothing comes into their hands.

Meeting the True Guru, they find Truth, and merge into the True Name. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When we act only to puff ourselves up, we end up empty-handed.

But meeting real wisdom, we find what's true and become part of it.

Effort spent just to puff yourself up ends up empty — goodness rooted in wisdom is what fills you.
The deeper layer

"Acting in ego, they lose, and nothing comes into their hands." Effort spent on self-inflation comes to nothing — a gentle, true observation. "Meeting the True Guru, they find Truth and merge into the True Name." The contrast is clear: self-serving effort empties you; goodness rooted in wisdom fills you.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how showing off can leave you feeling empty afterward?
