mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
satgur kee sayv na keenee-aa har naam na lago pi-aar.
They do not serve the True Guru, and they do not embrace love for the Lord's Name.
mat tum jaanhu o-ay jeevday o-ay aap maaray kartaar.
Do not even think that they are alive - the Creator Lord Himself has killed them.
ha-umai vadaa rog hai bhaa-ay doojai karam kamaa-ay.
Egotism is such a terrible disease; in the love of duality, they do their deeds.
naanak manmukh jeevdi-aa mu-ay har visri-aa dukh paa-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs are in a living death; forgetting the Lord, they suffer in pain. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When we live only for the puffed-up 'me,' something in us feels half-asleep.
Self-importance is a heavy illness to carry.
But turning toward the good wakes the heart back up to real life.
Living only for the puffed-up 'me' leaves us half-asleep — turning toward the good wakes the heart back to life.
A stern Shalok, softened: those lost in ego are "in a living death" — not truly alive. The qMonk voice renders this gently: living only for self-importance leaves us feeling half-asleep, half-alive; and turning toward the good wakes us up. "Egotism is such a terrible disease." For a child: living only for the puffed-up 'me' leaves us half-asleep — turning toward the good wakes the heart back to real life.
