Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 27 — this rare, precious life
ਜਉ ਸੁਖ ਕਉ ਚਾਹੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਰਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਲੇਹ ॥
ja-o sukh ka-o chaahai sadaa saran raam kee layh.
If you yearn for eternal peace, then seek the Sanctuary of the Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਦੁਰਲਭ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹ ॥੨੭॥
kaho naanak sun ray manaa durlabh maanukh dayh. ||27||
Says Nanak, listen, mind: this human body is difficult to obtain. ||27||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
If you long for peace that lasts forever, take shelter with the One.
Nanak says: listen, O my mind, this human body is hard to come by.
This human life is rare; spend it in the shelter of the One.
Lasting peace is found in the shelter of the One, and this human life is a rare chance.
Ja-o sukh ka-o chaahai: if you want peace. Sadaa saran raam kee layh: always take the shelter of the One.
Durlabh maanukh dayh: the human body is durlabh, hard to obtain. Many verses of the Guru Granth Sahib return to this idea: being born human is a rare gift, a chance to remember the One.
A Question to Sit With
If this life is a rare and precious gift, what is one thing you do not want to waste it on?
