Verse 28 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 28 — running and running for shiny things

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਧਾਵਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਲੋਗ ਅਜਾਨ ॥
maa-i-aa kaaran Dhaavhee moorakh log ajaan.
For the sake of Maya, the fools and ignorant people run all around.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਨ ॥੨੮॥
kaho naanak bin har bhajan birthaa janam siraan. ||28||
Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, life passes away uselessly. ||28||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

For the sake of Maya, money and things, foolish people who do not understand run all around.

Nanak says: without remembering the One, life slips away for nothing.

A day of only chasing feels empty; a little remembering makes it full.
The deeper layer

Running after things all day can leave a life empty.

maa-i-aa kaaran Dhaavhee — for Maya, money and things, people run all around. The verse calls them moorakh, foolish, and ajaan, not knowing. It is a very human habit. We all do it sometimes.

Think of a hamster on a wheel. It runs and runs but never gets anywhere. birthaa janam siraan — without remembering the One, life passes by with nothing to show. A day with a little love and stillness in it feels full. A day of only chasing feels empty by bedtime.

A Question to Sit With

After a day of chasing fun things, do you ever feel oddly empty? What might fill that?
