Says Nanak, in this tragedy, the Lord alone is my Support. ||55||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
My friends and companions have all left me; no one stayed by my side.
Nanak says: in this hard time, my one support is the Lord alone.
Even when everyone drifts away, the One remains, quietly holding you.
When everyone else has gone, the One is still the support.
Sang sakhaa sabh taj ga-ay: friends and companions have all left. Ko-oo na nib-hi-o saath: no one stayed with me to the end. The words are plain and honest about loneliness.
Ih bipat mai: in this trouble. Tayk ayk raghunaath: my one support is Raghunaath, a name of Raam that the Guru uses for the One. Guru Tegh Bahadur's own life ended in a hard trial, and many remember these lines alongside it.
A Question to Sit With
When you have felt most alone, what quietly held you and kept you going?
