The one who faces the Guru speaks the wisdom no words can hold.
Facing the Guru, you live a spiritual life right in the middle of your family.
Facing the Guru, you remember the One with love, deep inside.
Facing the Guru, you receive the Word and a good way of living.
You know the secret of the Word, and help others know it too.
Nanak says: burning away ego, you merge into the One.
You do not have to leave home to live a deep life with the One.
A gurmukh is someone who faces the Guru and lives by the teaching. Gurmukh nibhai saparvaar means the gurmukh lives the full spiritual life right in the middle of family life.
This is said to the Siddhas, yogis who had left their homes to go to the mountains. And the answer is clear. The kitchen table, homework, and bedtime stories can be holy places too. It is one of the clearest words in the Guru's teaching for the path of the householder, someone who lives with family and works in the world.
The gurmukh keeps the One in mind with love, knows the secret of the Word, and helps others know it. Last, ha-umai jaal means burning away ha-umai, the proud "me, me, me." Then the gurmukh melts into the One.
How could your own home be a place of deep practice?
