Sikhism·Sidh Gosht·Shabad 112
Verse 35 of 74

Kept Close to the Heart

pooray gur tay naam paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
Through the Perfect Guru, one obtains the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
jog jugat sach rahai samaa-ay.
The Way of Yoga is to remain absorbed in Truth.
baarah meh jogee bharmaa-ay sani-aasee chhi-a chaar.
The Yogis wander in the twelve schools of Yoga; the Sannyaasis in six and four.
gur kai sabad jo mar jeevai so paa-ay mokh du-aar.
One who remains dead while yet alive, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, finds the door of liberation.
bin sabdai sabh doojai laagay daykhhu ridai beechaar.
Without the Shabad, all are attached to duality. Contemplate this in your heart, and see.
naanak vaday say vadbhaagee jinee sach rakhi-aa ur Dhaar. ||34||
O Nanak, blessed and very fortunate are those who keep the True Lord enshrined in their hearts. ||34||

In plain words

Through the perfect Guru, the Naam is found.

The way of yoga is to stay merged in Truth.

The yogis wander lost among their twelve schools, the sannyasis (wandering monks) among their ten orders.

Whoever, through the Guru's Word, lets the small self die while still alive finds the door to freedom.

Without the Word, everyone clings to duality, to what is not the One. Think it over in your heart, and see.

Nanak says: great and very fortunate are those who keep the True One in their hearts.

You can wander through every path, or simply keep what is true close to your heart.
The deeper layer

Truth held in the heart outweighs every school and order. The yogis have twelve schools and the sannyasis ten, and one thing crowns them all: sach rakhi-aa ur dhaar, keeping Truth in the heart. Mar jeevai (dead while alive) is again the small self letting go while one fully lives.

A Question to Sit With

What do you keep closest to your heart?
