Sikhism·Sidh Gosht·Shabad 112
Verse 47 of 74

Melting the Ego

ha-o ha-o mai mai vichahu khovai.
Eradicating egotism and individualism from within,
doojaa maytai ayko hovai.
and erasing duality, the mortal becomes one with God.
jag karrhaa manmukh gaavaar.
The world is difficult for the foolish, self-willed manmukh;
sabad kamaa-ee-ai khaa-ee-ai saar.
practicing the Shabad, one chews iron.
antar baahar ayko jaanai.
Know the One Lord, inside and out.
naanak agan marai satgur kai bhaanai. ||46||
O Nanak, the fire is quenched, through the Pleasure of the True Guru's Will. ||46||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Empty the I-I and the mine-mine out from inside.

Wipe out the sense of two, and become one with the One.

The world is hard for the foolish mind that follows only itself.

Live the Word, and you can chew iron.

Know the One inside and out.

Nanak says: the fire goes out, in the sweet will of the True Guru.

The impossible becomes possible the moment the separate me melts.
The deeper layer

The iron gets chewed when the small, separate me melts away.

Hau hau mai mai is the chatter of ego, I-I and mine-mine. The iron-chewing riddle is answered here: the impossible is done by dissolving the separate self, never by force. The manmukh, the one who follows only the self, finds the world hard. Agan, the fire of craving, goes out satgur kai bhaanai, in the True Guru's will, as a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What does your own me-me, mine-mine voice sound like?
