Sikhism·Sidh Gosht·Shabad 112
Verse 48 of 74

The Cooled Heart

sach bhai raataa garab nivaarai.
Imbued with the True Fear of God, pride is taken away;
ayko jaataa sabad veechaarai.
realize that He is One, and contemplate the Shabad.
sabad vasai sach antar hee-aa.
With the True Shabad abiding deep within the heart,
tan man seetal rang rangee-aa.
the body and mind are cooled and soothed, and colored with the Lord's Love.
kaam kroDh bikh agan nivaaray.
The fire of sexual desire, anger and corruption is quenched.

O Nanak, the Beloved bestows His Glance of Grace. ||47||

In plain words

Dyed in loving awe of the True One, you let go of pride.

You know the One and think on the Word.

With the True Word living deep in your heart,

body and mind grow cool and calm, colored with love.

The fire of desire, anger and poison goes out.

Nanak says: the Beloved looks on you with grace.

A heart soaked in awe stays cool even when everything around it burns.
The deeper layer

Your heart stays cool in the fire when the Word lives inside it.

This answers the riddle of the snow house and the robes of fire: the heart is cooled, seetal, by the Word settling within, while the world around still burns. Sach bhai, awe of the True One, is a loving wonder that leaves no room for pride. Nadree nadar, the Glance of Grace, keeps the cooling a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What cools you down when you feel yourself heating up inside?
