Sikhism·Sidh Gosht·Shabad 112
Verse 50 of 74

The Moon Lit From Within

sabad bhaakhat sas jot apaaraa.
Giving voice to the Shabad, the moon of the mind is illuminated with infinity.
sas ghar soor vasai mitai anDhi-aaraa.
When the sun dwells in the house of the moon, the darkness is dispelled.
sukh dukh sam kar naam aDhaaraa.
Pleasure and pain are just the same, when one takes the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
aapay paar utaaranhaaraa.
He Himself saves, and carries us across.
gur parchai man saach samaa-ay.
With faith in the Guru, the mind merges in Truth,
paranvat naanak kaal na khaa-ay. ||49||
and then, prays Nanak, one is not consumed by Death. ||49||

In plain words

Speak the Word, and the moon of the mind fills with endless light.

When the sun comes to live in the moon's house, the darkness ends.

Joy and sorrow become the same when the Naam is your support.

The One carries you across.

Trusting the Guru, the mind merges in Truth.

Nanak prays: then death does not swallow you.

Hold joy and pain evenly, and even the fear of death loosens its grip.
The deeper layer

Holding joy and sorrow evenly, with the Naam as your support, is the warrior who faces death without fear.

The sun in the moon's house is awareness lighting up the calm mind. Sukh dukh sam, joy and pain held the same, answers the question of who conquers death: kaal na khaa-ay, death does not swallow the one whose mind rests in Truth. Death still comes to every body; what changes is its hold on the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay even when good and hard days come and go?
