Sikhism·Sidh Gosht·Shabad 112
Verse 63 of 74

The Unspoken Word

rang na raataa ras nahee maataa.
If one is not imbued with the Lord's Love, nor intoxicated with His subtle essence,
bin gur sabdai jal bal taataa.
without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is frustrated, and consumed by his own inner fire.
bind na raakhi-aa sabad na bhaakhi-aa.
He does not preserve his semen and seed, and does not chant the Shabad.
pavan na saaDhi-aa sach na araaDhi-aa.
He does not control his breath; he does not worship and adore the True Lord.
akath kathaa lay sam kar rahai.
But one who speaks the Unspoken Speech, and remains balanced,
ta-o naanak aatam raam ka-o lahai. ||62||
O Nanak, attains the Lord, the Supreme Soul. ||62||

In plain words

If you are not dyed in the One's love, not filled with its sweetness,

then without the Guru's Word you burn in your own inner fire.

You keep no discipline of the body, and you do not speak the Word.

You do not master the breath, and you do not worship the True One.

But whoever speaks the story that cannot be told, and stays balanced,

Nanak says, finds the One, the Soul of all.

Without love and the Word, the heart burns; balance brings you to the One.
The deeper layer

Without love and the Word, you burn in your own fire; balance and the Word bring you to the Soul of all.

The yogis prized discipline of the body and mastery of the breath. Here the person has neither the yogi's disciplines nor love of the Word, and burns inside. The way through is akath kathaa, speaking what cannot be spoken, and sam kar rahai, staying balanced. The turn is gentle and aimed at the heart, never at the yogis themselves.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever worked hard at something and missed the point of it?
