Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
"How, in what way, did the world begin, my friend? And what trouble will end it?"
In ego the world begins, my friend; forgetting the Naam, it suffers and dies.
Whoever faces the Guru thinks on the essence of wisdom and burns ego away with the Word.
Body and mind grow spotless through the spotless Word, and stay merged in the True One.
Through the Naam, they stay free of clinging and keep the True One in their heart.
Nanak says: without the Naam there is never any yoga; think it over in your heart and see.
Trouble begins in ego, the sense of being separate, and heals in remembering the Naam.
Haumai vich jag upjai: the world, as we live it, rises in ego. Forgetting the Naam brings suffering. Both the beginning and the end are answered from the inside. Bin naavai jog kaday na hovai, without the Naam there is no yoga, sounds here and again in the closing verses.
When do you feel most separate, and what brings you back?
