The Shop Inside Your Own Heart

haatee baatee need na aavai par ghar chit na dolaa-ee.
In the stores and on the road, do not sleep; do not let your consciousness covet anyone else's home.
bin naavai man tayk na tik-ee naanak bhookh na jaa-ee.
Without the Name, the mind has no firm support; O Nanak, this hunger never departs.
haat patan ghar guroo dikhaa-i-aa sehjay sach vaapaaro.
The Guru has revealed the stores and the city within the home of my own heart, where I intuitively carry on the true trade.
khandit nidraa alap ahaaraN naanak tat beechaaro. ||8||
Sleep little, and eat little; O Nanak, this is the essence of wisdom. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Among the shops and on the road, stay awake; do not let your mind wander toward what belongs to others.

Nanak says: without the Naam, the mind has nothing firm to lean on, and its hunger never goes away.

The Guru has shown me the shops and the city inside the home of my own heart, where I trade in Truth with ease.

Sleep a little, eat a little. Nanak says: this is the heart of wisdom.

The work happens in the marketplace of your own heart, not far away in a forest.
The deeper layer

You do not need to run to the woods; the practice happens haatee baatee, among the shops and roads, inside you. Haat pattan ghar guroo: the Guru shows the shop and the city within the home of the heart. The simple life the yogis prize (little sleep, little food) stays, but as an easy habit, not a feat of hardship.

A Question to Sit With

Can you stay calm and honest right in the middle of a busy day?
