How is the Society of the Saints to be known?
There, the Name of the One Lord is chanted.
The One Name is the Lord's Command. And the True Guru has given me this understanding.
Kiv jaan-ee-ai Saadh-sangat — how (kiv) is the Society of the Saints (Saadh-sangat) to be known (jaan-ee-ai)? How do you recognize genuine Sangat as opposed to a group that merely uses that name? The question is practical and important: in a tradition where spiritual community is essential to the path, how do you know if the community you are in is the real thing?
Ik naam japai — there, the One Name (ik naam) is chanted (japai). The test is simple and single: Is the One Name being chanted there? Not: Is it well-organized? Not: Is it established and ancient? Not: Are the people virtuous and respectable? The question is whether the One Name is alive in that community. If yes: genuine Sangat. If no: something else.
Naam hukam hai prabh-oo kaa — the Name (Naam) is the Lord's Command (hukam). The Naam is not an optional devotional supplement — it is the Hukam, the very operating principle of existence expressed in sound and attention. To chant the Name is to align with the Hukam. The community where this happens is therefore aligned with the deepest principle of creation.
What is the one thing you look for in a spiritual community — the quality that tells you it's genuine rather than merely organized?
