Shalok, Third Mehl:
aatmaa day-o poojee-ai gur kai sahj subhaa-ay.
Worship the Divine, Supreme Soul, with the intuitive peace and poise of the Guru.
aatmay no aatmay dee parteet ho-ay taa ghar hee parchaa paa-ay.
If the individual soul has faith in the Supreme Soul, then it shall obtain realization within its own home.
aatmaa adol na dol-ee gur kai bhaa-ay subhaa-ay.
The soul becomes steady, and does not waver, by the natural inclination of the Guru's Loving Will.
Without the Guru, intuitive wisdom does not come, and the filth of greed does not depart from within.
khin pal har naam man vasai sabh athsath tirath naa-ay.
If the Lord's Name abides within the mind, for a moment, even for an instant, it is like bathing at all the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
Filth does not stick to those who are true, but filth attaches itself to those who love duality.
This filth cannot be washed off, even by bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
manmukh karam karay ahaNkaaree sabh dukho dukh kamaa-ay.
The self-willed manmukh does deeds in egotism; he earns only pain and more pain.
naanak mailaa oojal taa thee-ai jaa satgur maahi samaa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, the filthy ones become clean only when they meet and surrender to the True Guru. ||1||

In plain words

Worship the Supreme Soul with the natural ease and peace that comes from the Guru's loving grace.

If the soul has faith in the Supreme Soul, it finds what it needs within its own home.

The mind steadies and stops wavering when the Guru's Will becomes your natural inclination — when you're following it not because you have to but because it's become who you are.

Without the Guru, deep wisdom doesn't come, and the greed within doesn't leave.

If the Lord's Name lives in the mind even for one moment — it is like bathing at all sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage.

Filth doesn't stick to those who are true. The filthy ones become clean only by meeting the True Guru.

One moment of the Naam equals sixty-eight sacred shrines — the inward journey accomplishes what no outward journey can.
The deeper layer

Sixty-eight sacred shrines in one moment of Naam

Naam ik nimakh jo man vasai, so sab tīrth nāu — "if the Lord's Name abides within the mind for a moment, even for an instant, it is like bathing at all the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage." The sixty-eight tīrthas (holy pilgrimage sites) represented the complete set of Hindu sacred geography — a full circuit of pilgrimage that could take years and extraordinary resources.

One moment of the Naam equals the entire circuit. This is not dismissal of pilgrimage but a radical recalibration of what has spiritual efficacy. The journey inward — even for a moment — accomplishes what years of outward journey cannot.

The Guru's Will as natural inclination

Sahaj subhāi man vasai, hari Guru kirpā — "the soul becomes steady and does not waver, by the natural inclination of the Guru's Loving Will." Sahaj subhāi — the "natural inclination" of the Guru. Sahaj again: the natural ease. When the Guru's way becomes natural — not effortful, not performed, not maintained by willpower but simply how you are — the mind stops wavering. The discipline has become character.

"Filth attaches to duality but not to truth"

Sach nāl jhoothu na chalai, jhoothai likhi lā'ie — "filth does not stick to those who are true, but filth attaches itself to those who love duality." Truth is the ultimate cleansing agent — not because it washes things off but because nothing sticks to it. The false attaches to the false. Truth moves through without accumulating.

A Question to Sit With

*Has there been a moment of genuine inner clarity or peace that felt more real than any place you've visited or any practice you've done? What was that like?*
