From Air Came Water, From Water Came the Three Worlds

ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਪਵਨੈ ਤੇ ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
saachay tay pavnaa bha-i-aa pavnai tay jal ho-ay.
From the True Lord came the air, and from the air came water.

jal tay taribhavan saaji-aa ghat ghat jot samo-ay.
From water, He created the three worlds; in each and every heart He has infused His Light.

nirmal mailaa naa thee-ai sabad ratay pat ho-ay. ||3||
The Immaculate Lord does not become polluted. Attuned to the Shabad, honor is obtained. ||3||

In plain words

From the True Lord came air. From air came water.

From water, He made the three worlds. In each and every heart He placed His Light.

The Pure One never gets dirty. Those tuned to the Word receive honor.

The divine light is embedded in every created heart — you are not searching for it from outside, you are remembering it from inside.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak tells how everything came from the True One, and how the One's light lives in every heart.

Saachay tay pavnaa bha-i-aa pavnai tay jal ho-ay means from the True One came air, and from air came water. From water came the three worlds. The order is One, then air, then water, then the world. Many old stories from India and other lands tell it in a similar way. It is a caring picture of the natural world, all coming from one Source.

The new part is the last line. Ghat ghat jot samo-ay means in each and every heart He placed His Light. Jot means light. The Creator did not make the world and walk away. The light is inside every heart and every creature.

Think of a house where every room is on the same electric line. Every light comes from the same power.

So why do people suffer? Not because the light left them. They got stuck on maya, the pull of things that do not last, and forgot the light inside. Nirmal mailaa naa thee-ai means the Pure One never gets dirty. Every heart has the light. No one is left out. That is why Guru Nanak welcomed everyone.

A Question to Sit With

If every heart has the light inside it — including people you find difficult — what would it change about how you see them?
