Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The Gurmukh puts out the four fires with the water of the Lord's Name.
The lotus opens deep inside the heart. Filled with sweet nectar, one is satisfied.
O Nanak, make the True Guru your friend. Going to His Court, you will find the True Lord.
This line says: the Name is like water that puts out the fires burning inside us.
Chaaray agan: the four fires. They are the strong pulls that burn inside a person: desire, anger, greed, and clinging to things. Gurmukh har jal paa-ay: the Gurmukh, the one who follows the Guru, pours on har jal, the water of the Lord's Name.
The water does not fight the fire with force. It works because it gives the heart what the fires were really reaching for. Think of being really thirsty and reaching for a fizzy drink. A glass of cool water does the job better, and the craving goes quiet.
Antar kamal pargaasi-aa: the lotus opens inside the heart. A lotus grows in muddy water, yet its flower rises clean above it. A heart holding the Name is like that. It lives in a busy, messy world, but it stays open and clear.
Amrit bhari-aa aghaa-ay: filled with amrit, sweet nectar, it is satisfied.
Naanak satgur meet kar: make the True Guru your friend. With that friend, you reach His Court and find the True Lord.
What is the fire inside you that burns most persistently? What do you think it's actually reaching for?
