Meditate on the Lord — follow the teacher's guidance, and speak from that place.
Apply the touchstone of truth to your mind and see if it measures up to its full weight.
No one has found the full worth of the ruby of the heart. Its value can't be counted.
This one asks us to test our own minds, the way people once tested gold.
In Guru Nanak's time, people checked gold with a kasvatee, a touchstone. You rubbed the gold on the dark stone. Real gold left a bright streak and showed how pure it was. Guru Nanak says: man sach kasvatee laa-ee-ai, "rub your mind on the touchstone of Truth." Test it. See what it is really made of. Tulee-ai poorai tol: does it come up to full weight?
Before that he says: har har japahu pi-aari-aa, "remember the One, my dear," and gurmat lay, follow the Guru's teaching.
Then comes the surprise. Keemat kinai na paa-ee-ai rid maanak mol amol: no one has found the price of the ruby of the heart. Its worth can't be counted. Your deepest self is a jewel. It's worth more than anything in any shop.
Japji Sahib says the same thing in its sixth pauri: rubies and diamonds are already inside your mind.
If you had to describe your own inner value — not what you've achieved or what others think, but what's actually there — what would you say?
