Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
They all show off and pretend. But the self-willed manmukhs — those oriented only toward themselves — do not understand.
Those Gurmukhs who are pure of heart — their service is accepted. They sing the praises of the Lord. They read about the Lord each day. Singing praise, they merge in absorption.
O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Lord's love — they have realized the purpose of this human life.
The closing pauri draws the contrast sharply: vekhaavaa (show, performance) versus nirmal (pure of heart). The performance of devotion is not the same as devotion. But the pure of heart — whatever their outer appearance — are recognized and accepted.
"They have realized the purpose of human life" — janm safal — the birth has been made fruitful. This is Guru Amar Das's highest compliment: the human birth was not wasted.
What do you think the purpose of your life is — not what you've been told it should be, but what you actually feel it might be?
