Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, give up slander, ego, and pride.

Become Gurmukh. Meditate forever on the Dear Lord, the One and Only Creator.

Three things fill the inner space with noise — remove them and the Name becomes audible.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It gives a clear instruction: let go of three things.

Mayray man taj nindaa ha-umai ahankaar: "O my mind, let go of slander, ego and pride." The three are related, but each is different.

Nindaa (slander) means pointing your attention outward to find fault and tear others down.

Ha-umai (ego) is the deep feeling of "me," cut off from everyone else.

Ahankaar (pride) is the puffed-up feeling that grows out of that "me."

Clearing these out makes a quiet, open space inside. There, the Name can be heard. It's like turning off three blaring TVs in a room. Only then can you hear the soft music that was playing all along.

Har jee-o sadaa dhi-aa-ay too gurmukh aykankaar: facing the Guru, always remember the Dear One, the one Creator.

A Question to Sit With

Of the three — slander, ego-pride, arrogance — which is your most persistent one? What situations trigger it most reliably?
