In plain words

O mind, sing His praises and be full of joy forever.

Through the True Word, the Lord is found, and you stay wrapped up in the Lord.

The inner life and the community life reinforce each other — neither alone is complete.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the song. It says: sing the praises of the One, and you will be joyful.

Man ray sadaa anand gun gaa-ay — O mind, sing His praises and be full of joy forever. Sachee banee har paa-ee-ai — through the True Word, the Bani, the Lord is found. Har si-o rahai samaa-ay — and you stay wrapped up in the Lord.

Guru Amar Das often puts two things together. One is Keertan, singing the praises of the One. The other is the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, the good company we sing with. Each one helps the other.

Think of learning a song at home, then singing it with a big choir. Alone, you learn it and make it yours. In the choir, it grows fuller and stronger, and it stays with you longer. What you find inside yourself, the community helps hold steady. What you practice together, you take home and make personal.

A Question to Sit With

What is the role of community in your spiritual or inner life? Do you have a community that deepens what you discover alone? What would that look like if you don't?
