Sikhism·Siree Raag·Shabad 58
Verse 4 of 5

I Have Grown Weary of Making Friends

aapay rangan rangi-on sabday la-i-on milaa-ay.
He Himself dyes us in the Color of His Love; through the Word of His Shabad, He unites us with Himself.
This True Color shall not fade away, for those who are attuned to His Love.
The self-willed manmukhs grow weary of wandering around in all four directions, but they do not understand.
jis satgur maylay so milai sachai sabad samaa-ay. ||3||
One who is united with the True Guru, meets and merges in the True Word of the Shabad. ||3||

In plain words

I have grown weary of making friends with other people. All those connections left me when I needed them.

Without the True Teacher, I found no friend at all — no one stayed, no one could.

The Teacher is the friend who is not going anywhere. Everything else was practice for recognizing this.

Weariness with connections that don't hold eventually leads to finding the One that does.
The deeper layer

One of Guru Amar Das's most personal-sounding lines: tham tham mitar kari thakiaa — I grew weary of making friends. The friendships of the world did not hold; the connections did not sustain. This is the human experience of impermanence in relationship.

But the tone is not bitter — it is grateful. The weariness led to the recognition: bin Satgur mitar na paa-i-aa — without the True Guru, no friend was found. The turning is not away from connection but toward the connection that holds.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt let down by a friendship or connection that you thought would be permanent? What did that teach you about what genuine connection actually requires?
