Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Through the Shabad, union with the Lord is obtained. And one is never separated from Him again.
The Gurmukhs praise the Lord and cross over the terrifying ocean of existence.
O Nanak, meditating on the Name, the mind is absorbed — and eternal peace is found.
The closing pauri: Shabad mili-aa so mili-aa — united through the Shabad, truly united. Not temporarily — not as a recurring peak followed by separation. The union achieved through the Shabad is permanent.
The bhavsaagar (terrifying ocean of existence) is crossed. This image of crossing — the soul-journey as crossing an ocean — is ancient in Indian religious literature. The Shabad is the boat, the Guru is the ferryman, and the shore is the permanent union.
Have you ever experienced a state of genuine peace or union — even briefly — and then lost it again? What was different about being in it versus not being in it?
