Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Let me forget everything — but let me not forget the One Lord.
All my evil pursuits have been burnt away. The Guru has blessed me with the Naam, the true object of life.
Give up all other hopes and rely on the One Hope.
Those who serve the True Guru find a place waiting for them in the world beyond.
Guru Arjan prays: let me forget anything else, but never let me forget the One.
Sabhay galaa visran iko visar na jaa-o means let me forget everything, but not the One. This is not about losing your memory. It is about putting first things first. When the One comes first, everything else finds its place. You do not have to juggle it all so carefully, because the One is already holding it.
Think of packing a school bag. Put the big book in first, and the small things fit around it.
Dhandhaa sabh jalaa-ay kai means all my empty, wrong chasing has been burnt away. That happens through the bright fire of the Name, not through punishment. The Name is so full of light that whatever cannot stand in its light simply fades.
Gur naam dee-aa sach su-aa-o means the Guru gave me the Name, the true taste of life. The Name is not just a step toward the goal of life. It is the goal itself.
Aasaa sabhay laahi kai ikaa aas kamaa-o means set down all other hopes and keep the One hope.
If you could keep only one thing from everything you know and have experienced, what would it be? What does that choice reveal about what you actually value most?
