In plain words

O my mind, praise the Creator.

Give up all your clever tricks, and fall at the Feet of the Guru.

Give up the clever tricks — they are the ego's last line of defense against the surrender that opens everything.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the shabad. It says: praise the Creator, and drop your clever tricks.

Man mayray kartay no saalaahi means O my mind, praise the Creator. Sabhay chhad si-aanpaa means give up all your clever tricks. That may sound strange. Shouldn't we use our brains? But the ego's cleverness is different from real wisdom. It is a big bag of tricks for looking good while never really letting go.

Think of a kid who spends an hour making excuses for not cleaning their room. The room would have taken ten minutes.

Gur kee pairee paahi means fall at the Guru's feet. It is a picture of humble love. The clever person keeps planning. The humble person bows. The bowing is the way in.

A Question to Sit With

What clever strategies do you use to feel like you're dealing with something difficult without actually changing? What would change if you dropped the strategy and just fell?
