In plain words

Pain and hunger shall not oppress you if the Giver of Peace comes into your mind.

No undertaking shall fail when the True Lord is always in your heart.

No one can kill the one whom You, Lord, give Your Hand and protect.

Serve the Guru, the Giver of Peace. He will wash away all your faults.

When the Lord's Hand protects, no one can kill what He has made alive — the circumstances may be hard, but they cannot destroy.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says that when the Giver of Peace lives in your mind, the One's hand holds you through everything.

He names several promises. Dukh bhukh nah vi-aapa-ee means pain and hunger will not crush you. Kit hee kamm na chhijee-ai means no task of yours will fall apart. Jis toon rakheh hath day tis maar na sakai ko-ay means no one can kill the one You protect with Your hand.

These are not promises that life will always be comfortable. They are promises that the person held by the One stands differently in hard times. Pain does not crush them. Hunger does not rule them. Troubles do not knock them off course. The outside may look the same. The inside is changed.

Think of a kid learning to swim with a parent's hand under their back. The water is just as deep, but they are not afraid.

Sabh avgan kadhai dho-ay means the Guru washes away all your faults.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever been in a difficult situation and felt genuinely protected — not that the difficulty went away, but that something held you through it? What was that?
