Every Chase Is an Order Shipped to the Wrong Address
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The wealth you chase in all four directions - it is found by serving the One.
The peace you have always ached for, friend - it comes through loving the Sangat.
The shine you do good deeds hoping for - it arrives by taking shelter. And the disease that no remedy could touch - it heals with one medicine: the Name.
Of every treasure there is, the Name is the crown. Nanak says: say it, and be received.
Every chase is a good wish sent to the wrong address.
The pauri is a set of redirects. Each one honors the wish and fixes where it is sent. jis Dhan ka-o chaar kunt uth Dhaaveh — the wealth you run after in all four directions comes by serving the One. The peace you always long for comes through loving the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. The glory you do good deeds for comes by taking shelter in the One.
Nothing the seeker wants is laughed at. Think of a package that keeps going to the wrong house. The order was fine. The address was wrong. An earlier section of Sukhmani used the same kind "if this, then that" ladder.
Then the medicine line: anik upaavee rog na jaa-ay — many remedies, and the illness stays. Grown-ups know this ache. It is a quiet unease that stays after every purchase, every prize, every move and every fresh start. rog mitai har avkhaDh laa-ay — it heals when the One's Name is given as medicine. AvkhaDh means medicine. Sukhmani says so plainly, because the eighteen sections before have earned it.
sarab niDhaan meh har naam niDhaan — of all treasures, the Name is the greatest.
The restlessness that survives every new thing you get - what have you tried on it so far, and what is left to try?
