The World's Power Over You Is Made of Its Divisions
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
He is the speaker, and He is the listener. He is the One - and He is the many.
When it pleases Him, a world unfolds; as He pleases, it folds back into Him.
Without You, nothing gets done - the whole world is strung on Your thread.
Whoever He moves to understand receives the True Name - looks on everyone with the same eye, knows the essence - and, says Nanak, that person has conquered the world.
The world pulls on us through its divisions. When we see the One in all, it has nothing left to pull.
aap kathai aap sunnaihaar — the One is the speaker, and the One is the listener. Every conversation, even a prayer, is the One passing meaning from one hand to the other. An earlier section said the same about teacher and student.
But the pauri is heading for its last line. The one who understands is samadrasee, someone who sees everyone with the same eye. naanak sagal sarisat kaa jaytaa — that person wins over the whole world.
How? Not with armies. The world's hold on a person is made of its divisions: this to crave, that to fear, this one a friend, that one an enemy. Think of a puppet on strings. Each string is a "this, not that." See the one thread that runs through everyone, aapan soot sabh jagat paro-ay, and the strings go slack. The world has no levers left to pull. A person with the equal eye can walk through every quarrel without being pulled onto a side.
Who pushes your buttons, and what do they use? What if the button-making machinery - us versus them - simply switched off?
