A Symbol Can't Make You Good; Only Character Can
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
A person can wear the holy thread and still lie, cheat, and harm others all day long.
The string doesn't stop any of that — and when it wears out, it's just thrown away. If it had any real strength, it wouldn't break at all.
This shalok drives home why the outer thread misses the point. A person can wear the sacred thread and still commit thousands of deceptions and harms against others — the string on the shoulder does nothing to make the heart honest. And its final logic is almost playful: the cotton thread wears out and is thrown away, and a new one put on — so if it had any real strength, it wouldn't break. A symbol that frays and gets replaced clearly isn't the source of any real goodness. The true 'thread' — compassion and truth, from the verse before — is the one that can't break, because it lives in who you are, not what you wear. Don't trust a badge to make you good; only your actual character does that.
Why can't wearing a special symbol make someone honest or kind, if their heart isn't?
