In plain words

Being close to someone foolish or full of themselves doesn't leave much behind.

It's like drawing a line in water — the moment you make it, it's gone.

Closeness with shallow or puffed-up people doesn't hold — like a line drawn in water, it vanishes.
The deeper layer

A short, memorable image about who you get close to: friendship with a fool, and love with a pompous person, are like lines drawn in water — leaving no trace. You can pour real affection toward someone shallow or self-absorbed, but it doesn't hold — like trying to draw a line on the surface of a pond, gone the instant you make it. It's not unkind; it's just honest about where your heart's investment takes root and where it evaporates. The Vaar isn't saying be cold to such people; it's saying choose your close companions — the ones you build real bonds with — among those with depth and humility, where the line you draw actually stays.

A Question to Sit With

What kind of person makes a friendship that actually lasts and holds?
