Salok Sehskritee, Salok 26 — Empty Hands and the One's Grace

ਨਹ ਸਮਰਥੰ ਨਹ ਸੇਵਕੰ ਨਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਰਮ ਪੁਰਖੋਤਮੰ ॥
nah samrathaN nah sayvkaN nah pareet param parkhotamaN.
I have no power; I do not serve You, and I do not love You, O Supreme Sublime Lord God.

tav parsaad simartay naamaN naanak kirpaal har har guraN. ||22||
By Your Grace, Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Merciful Lord, Har, Har. ||22||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have no power. I do not serve You, and I do not love You, O Highest, Most Wonderful One.

Nanak says: by Your grace I remember the Naam, O kind Lord, Har, Har, my Guru.

With nothing of my own, I remember the Naam by the One's grace.
The deeper layer

With nothing of our own to offer, we can still remember the Naam, because the One's grace makes it happen.

Nah samrathan nah sayvkan nah pareet: no power, no service, no love. It is an honest look at empty hands. Tav parsaad simartay naaman: by Your grace, I remember the Naam. The remembering itself is the gift.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a part of you that feels 'not enough'? What if that honest feeling was a doorway, not a wall?
