Savaiye in praise of Guru Ram Das, Verse 17 — the moon that lit the whole world
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Guru Ram Das was given the throne of raaj jog, ruling like a king and staying joined with the One.
First, Guru Nanak lit up the world like the full moon and filled it with joy. To carry people across, he shared his light.
He gave Guru Angad the treasure of wisdom and the story no words can tell. Guru Angad brought the five demons inside under control, and the fear of death had no hold on him.
The great, true Guru Amar Das kept honor safe in this dark age. Seeing his lotus feet, wrongdoing is wiped away.
When his heart was fully pleased in every way, he gave Guru Ram Das the throne of raaj jog.
The light passes to Guru Ram Das like a crowning.
Guru Ram Das receives raaj jog takhat, the throne of raaj jog. It is a way of being: fully busy in the world, and fully free inside.
First came Guru Nanak. The verse calls him chand, the moon. Moonlight is cool and gentle. It shows you the path without hurting your eyes. Guru Nanak lit up the world like a full moon and filled it with joy.
He gave Guru Angad the treasure of wisdom and the story no words can tell. Guru Angad brought the five pulls under control, and the fear of death had no hold on him.
Guru Amar Das kept honor alive in kalijug, the dark age. A dark age is exactly where light is needed most, like a lamp at night. When he was fully pleased, he placed the throne on Guru Ram Das.
What is something good that was handed to you that you would want to hand on someday?
