Savaiye in praise of Guru Ram Das, Verse 8 — wisdom for a mother, contentment for a father
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The flow of loving devotion, the love from long ago, never stops.
The True Guru drinks the stream of nectar, the sweetness of the endless Word.
Wisdom is his mother and contentment is his father. He is absorbed in the ocean of calm.
The Guru is the form of the One who was never born and exists by itself. By his words, he carries the world across.
In his mind he has set the Word of the unseen, unreachable, endless One.
Kal says: Guru Ram Das, you have found the One who lifts up the whole world.
Wisdom is the Guru's mother and contentment is his father.
Mat maataa santokh pitaa means "wisdom is his mother, contentment is his father." Picture a child raised by those two parents. That child grows up calm and at ease.
The verse opens with a stream of loving devotion that never stops. The Guru drinks from the deep, endless Word. He rests in sahj, an easy, natural peace, like a swimmer floating in a calm lake.
Aajonee sambhvi-a-o means "never born, and existing on its own." These words echo the Mool Mantar, the opening lines of the Guru Granth Sahib. Here they describe the light that lives in the Guru. By his words, the Guru carries the world across.
Kal calls Guru Ram Das the one who found jagat uDhaaran, the One who lifts up the world: a presence that lifts people up.
If you could pick two qualities to raise you like parents, which would you choose?
