In plain words

People study the Vedas, the Puranas and the Shastras.

Keeping the Naam of the One Creator in the heart,

whole families, every generation, are saved.

Nanak says: by great good fortune, a few cross over this way.

Keep the Naam of the One Creator in your heart.
The deeper layer

Keeping the Naam of the One Creator in the heart lifts up a whole family.

The verse begins with bayd puraan saastar, the Vedas, the Puranas and the Shastras. These are the old holy books of India, and people think about them with great care.

Then comes aykankaar naam ur Dhaara(n): holding the Naam of the One Creator in the heart. Kulah samooh sagal uDhaara(n): that lifts up the whole family line, not only you.

The verse ends with badbhaagee, great good fortune. Only a few cross over this way. It is a rare gift.

A Question to Sit With

What is a wise book or teaching your family honors, and where does it point?
