Phunhay, Verse 8 — what is not yours brings shame
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Those who chase after someone else's wife end up in shame.
Those who steal what belongs to others, day after day — how can they hide what they have done?
Singing the praises of the One makes a person pure and carries the whole family across.
O Lord! Those who listen become pure, and they think on the Supreme One.
Taking what is not yours makes the heart heavy. Singing the One's praise makes it light.
The verse names two wrongs. One is chasing someone else's husband or wife. The other is stealing what belongs to someone else. Chhidar kat dhaakee-ah: how can a hole like that be covered up?
Think of breaking something and trying to hide it. It sits in your stomach all day. The heaviness is hard to hide.
Then the verse turns to the bright side. Har gun, the praises of the One, make a person pavitar, clean inside. That goodness reaches the whole family, down the generations. Those who listen and think about the One become pure too.
How does it feel inside when you take only what is yours?
